Breast MRI helps us solve problems and is usually done with breast mammography. Mammography is used to screen for breast cancer. It uses X-rays to take digital images of the breast.

Sometimes breast MRI is used while doing a breast biopsy. A breast biopsy is when a small sample is taken from your breast. The biopsy may help your doctor find answers to questions about your health.

  • There are two kinds of breast MRI exams that take about the same amount of time:

    • Without IV contrast takes 45 minutes
    • With IV contrast takes 45 to 50 minutes
IV contrast is when a special liquid is put into the vein to help take better images during the MRI.

  • A specialized radiologist will review your exam and send a report to your doctor. Your doctor will talk to you about your exam results. After you talk to your doctor, the results are also available on MyChart.

When you'll get results will depend on what type of breast MRI you're having.
