Breast reconstruction can be a major step on a woman’s recovery from breast cancer. One option is the Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap procedure. Two Polyclinic plastic surgeons, Dr. Kevin Beshlian and Dr. Keith Paige, discussed their expertise in this method of microsurgical breast reconstruction on KING-5’s Evening Magazine in 2015.
Listen to Dr. Kevin Beshlian and Dr. Keith Paige discuss DIEP flap breast reconstruction surgery. Also featured is patient Carrie Stark who has made a successful recovery from the procedure.
"Conceptually the idea is to take the tissue from the abdomen, essentially the same tissue that would be discarded if you were doing a tummy tuck, but transplant it and make a breast," said Dr. Beshlian. Dr. Paige added, "And when it's done, it's permanent, it's good for the rest of your life."
The segment also features their patient Carrie Stark. As a young mother of three, she underwent treatment for breast cancer at The Polyclinic, including breast reconstruction using the DIEP flap method, and has made a successful recovery from the procedure.
