Falls are one of the leading causes of fatal and non-fatal injuries among the elderly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Why are falls serious?
In addition to injury, falling can lead to a loss of confidence and questioning whether it’s safe to do normal day-to-day activities. We know falls are serious and that your overall balance and steadiness is a very important part of quality of life.
What can disrupt balance and cause falls?
Many medical conditions can cause frequent falls, such as dizziness, inner ear problems, poor vision, medications, muscle weakness, poor balance or lack of coordination.
At The Polyclinic, our physical therapists will examine strength, flexibility, gait and balance. If necessary, we assess your walking pattern using high-definition video. Patients with vertigo use video goggles, allowing us to examine how your eyes and ears react when you change position.
Following examination, physical therapy treatments will include special maneuvers or exercises designed to decrease dizziness. Your therapist will also develop a customized exercise program to help improve strength and balance. Our clinics are equipped with the Biodex FreeStep supported ambulation system, which will let you do intensive balance and agility training without fear of falling.
Fall prevention is serious and a special area of focus for our physical therapists. We work closely with you throughout diagnosis and treatment to support your goals and abilities.
