Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk like lower cholesterol.

Get enough exercise.
Healthy adults ages 18-65 should get at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity five days of the week. (For extra motivation, check out our workout playlist.) Older adults also need regular exercise, but should consult with their doctor before starting an exercise program.

Eat a healthy diet.
A heart-healthy diet includes whole grains, plenty of fruits and vegetables, low saturated fats and fish (preferably fatty fish) at least two times per week. (Missing a sweet treat? Try one of these healthier options.)

Quit smoking.
Cigarette smokers are three to six times more likely to have a heart attack than non-smokers.

See your doctor regularly.
With regular exams, your doctor can monitor your cholesterol levels and blood pressure, while looking for other signs that may help prevent heart disease or detect it early.

You should consult a doctor immediately if you notice:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Discomfort in your chest, upper abdomen, neck, jaw or arms with physical exertion, exercise or emotional stress
