Listen to Katherine discuss cholesterol and The Polyclinic Lipid Clinic on IRG Health Talk.

Katherine Parikh, a nurse practitioner in The Polyclinic’s Lipid Clinic, was recently featured on KOMO radio’s Health Talk program sharing how she works with patients to help manage their cholesterol.

Katherine said a good way to remember the two types of cholesterol is that the HDL cholesterol is the ‘healthy’ cholesterol that transports bad cholesterol out of the bloodstream. She referred to LDL as the ‘lousy’ cholesterol that contributes to plaque buildup and narrowing of the arteries.

Katherine and her colleagues in the Lipid Clinic perform a comprehensive risk assessment for patients though bloodwork and by reviewing a patient’s complete medical history and current lifestyle including diet, exercise, sleep, oral care, and stress levels. Then they develop a plan using tools and strategies to improve cholesterol levels as needed with lifestyle changes and/or medication.
