a young man cleansing his face

Skin care treatments for men have become an increasingly common discussion in my dermatology clinic. Until recently, most men’s skin care routines were very basic and focused on keeping skin clean. However, now more and more men are pursuing younger, healthier looking skin and are willing to spend a little more time and money to do so.

To help men get started on a skin care routine that helps them achieve their goals and remain convenient and easy to maintain, I suggest the following tips.

Three-Step Skin Care Routine for Men

  1. Cleanse:

A cleansing wash does not have to be stripping to be effective. I advise my patients to stay away from overly drying alcohol-based or acid products.

A couple cleansers I love include:
    • Neutrogena’s Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser
    • Elta MD’s Foaming Facial Cleanser.
These will leave your skin clean and fresh without being irritating or over-drying.

  2. Moisturize/protect:

While this is #2 on the list, it’s actually the most important. Nothing has a higher bang-for-the-buck impact than a good moisturizer with sunscreen used EVERY day. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are affiliated with photo-aging and sun damage which will put you at risk for wrinkles and sun spots. It doesn’t have to be greasy or difficult to apply, either! I would look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen, this is one that will protect you against UVA and UVB rays.

    Suggested brands include:
    • Elta MD, which makes a great UV Daily sunscreen with an SPF of 40
    • Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Sunscreen with an SPF of 20 is another personal favorite
    • Anthelios Sport by La Roche-Posay is great for long days in the sun-it is a liquid and non-greasy and packs an SPF of 60.

  3. Consider a retinol.

These vitamin A-based creams are highly effective in reversing the signs of aging. They are applied at night after your cleanser and before a moisturizer. No other product has been so rigorously tested and proven to provide results. A personal favorite is Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair. If you are prone to dry skin, I would consider starting every other night and increasing to nightly as tolerated.

In addition to starting a simple skin care routine, you may want to include a procedure or two to help jump start your results. Here are a few of the most popular procedures for men:

Correct dark spots

Intense Pulsed light, or IPL, uses specific wavelengths of light to improve the appearance of sun damaged skin and freckles. Not only does it help with sun spots, but it can also decrease redness caused by broken capillaries and rosacea. It requires no downtime and can be used on multiple areas of the body for rejuvenation of the skin.

Relax that frown

If you are looking to reduce the appearance of frown lines, crow’s feet or forehead lines, Botox might be for you. Botulinum toxin works to relax facial muscles and inhibit their contraction. Treatments can provide a rejuvenated, relaxed look with minimal downtime and minimal discomfort. This is one of the fastest growing dermatologic procedures for men, and one of the fastest ways to treat the appearance of unwanted fine lines.

Remove a double chin

Today there is no more need for surgery to remove an extra chin (or two). Kybella is an innovative, FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment to eliminate your double chin without going under the knife. Kybella is composed of deoxycholic acid, a natural product of the body used to digest fat. When injected into the chin, it melts away fat cells, permanently.

The Polyclinic Dermatology offers a wide range of products and procedures to improve the look and feel of your skin and reduce the signs of aging. Contact our office at 206.860.4691 for more information or to schedule an appointment. We look forward to helping you.
