We’ve teamed up with Connexion Insurance Solutions to provide you answers to some of the frequently-asked-questions patients ask about Medicare. Each month we’ll publish an article or series of questions that are commonly asked about Medicare.

What are some advantages of Medicare Advantage plans?

With Medicare Advantage plans you often get some nice extras that you don’t see in Medicare by itself. Often included is the benefit of membership to a fitness club which can reduce your need for care or prescription drugs. Some Medicare Advantage plans have hearing, vision or limited dental benefits, all designed to promote optimal health.

Some plans have limited transportation benefits to help get you to the doctor or pharmacy, as needed. Be sure to ask your Medicare insurance agent to highlight the added-value benefits included in each of the plans you are considering.

Why is it important to evaluate your Medicare plan every year?

Medicare health plans typically change every year so you want to make sure the plan you have is still suitable and the best value. Changes to Medicare Advantage plans often include which doctors are contracted with the plan as “in-network”, which prescription drugs are covered, as well as changes to monthly premiums or other cost shares like deductibles or copayments (copays). New insurance plans may be added to the market in your area that may suit your needs better. Additionally, your health condition may have changed, extending your list of prescriptions or doctors.

You only have one guaranteed enrollment window (Open Enrollment, Oct.15-Dec. 7).

  • Put an annual reminder on your calendar to review your options with a Medicare health plan expert, preferably before Thanksgiving, so you have time to make any needed changes.
