We’ve teamed up with Connexion Insurance Solutions to provide you answers to some of the frequently-asked-questions patients ask about Medicare. Each month we’ll publish an article or series of questions that are commonly asked about Medicare.
Q. How does Medicare Part A work with my employer insurance?
A.When you have an employer-sponsored health plan as well as Medicare Part A (hospital coverage) the size of the group plan will make a difference in how your benefits are applied. If the employer group size (number of covered employees) is over 20, the employer-sponsored benefits are applied first. If you are covered by a smaller employer (not more than 20 covered employees), then Medicare would pay first. The insurance company will work with the government to coordinate the benefits and who pays how much.”

Could proceeds from the sale of my home have an impact on how my Medicare Part B and Part D costs are calculated?
A.Yes, Medicare Part B (services and supplies benefit) and Part D (prescription drug benefit) costs are based on your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI). Gains from the sale of a home are considered taxable income. How much you would have to pay depends on how high your income is. Please consult your tax advisor for advice on your specific situation.
