A Q & A with Brittany Ng, OD; Optometrist

What are your go-to healthy foods?

“Some of my favorite go-to healthy foods are soft-boiled eggs on top of all my foods for a delicious boost of protein. I also love freshly baked almonds, which leave your house smelling wonderfully nutty. The staple greens I get every week are spinach, kale, scallions, and bok choy.”

What are your splurge foods?

“Some of my favorite splurges are specialty flavored lattes, boba tea, dim sum (especially the rice noodle sheets –cheong fun), oysters on the half shell, and fancy summery cocktails.”

What are some of your favorite ways to move (and how often)?

“I love to run approximately two to three times per week, although I haven’t been as diligent about this during the pandemic. I also enjoy body weight training at home once or twice a week to balance out the running.”

What is some favorite healthful advice you received and why?

“Try to eat the rainbow every day is some of my favorite healthful advice! Colorful fruits and veggies are chock-full of nutrients that help maintain a balanced and healthy diet.”

What is some healthful advice you give to your patients and why?

“Nearly every day, I remind patients to do blinking exercises if they are heavy computer users. I recommend taking 10 forceful blinks six times a day while looking out to the distance. This promotes a healthy ocular surface and tear film which helps prevent symptoms of dry eye.”

What did you learn in your medical training that inspires or reminds you to take care of your health?

“I learned the importance of caring for each patient as I would my family member or close friend. And for me to be able to care for my family member to the very best of my ability, I need to make sure I take care of myself.”

What are some of your favorite ways to practice self-care?

“Growing and propagating succulents and potted plants is one of my favorite way to practice self-care. (I have extras, please inquire if you would like some!) I also make sure to take time each night to watch a show or play a video game with my husband. Of course, pet therapy with snuggles from the family dog is also wonderful.”
