Diabetes Causes and Prevention

What causes diabetes and can we prevent it? Dr. Reshma Desai says it depends on a number of factors.

Listen to Dr. Reshma Desai discuss prediabetes on IRG Health Talk.

Diabetes is categorized by higher than normal blood sugar levels, but there are different ranges that predispose a person for being diabetic or pre-diabetic. People can also have two different types of diabetes with each one having a different cause. Those with type 1 diabetes are genetically predisposed and born with it, while those with type 2 diabetes usually develop it later in life due to lifestyle related factors like poor diet and lack of exercise.

Dr. Desai says what’s key is catching prediabetes early and making lifestyle changes before it’s too late and turns to diabetes. Prediabetes doesn’t always show symptoms, but it can be discovered in blood tests and stopped or reversed by doing things like working out more and eating less red meats and processed sugars.
