Polyclinic cardiologist Dr. Kier Huehnergarth was recently featured on KOMO radio along with David Watkins, founder of the Iron Heart Foundation. The two talked with IRG president Shannon O’Kelley about how cardiac patients can regain a healthy lifestyle through sports.

Listen to Dr. Huehnergarth discuss how exercise can help cardiac patients with host Shannon O’Kelley.

Dr. Huehnergarth shared that regular exercise is key to reducing your risk of cardiovascular disease by helping lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and your risk for diabetes. People don’t need to run a marathon, he says, but should be active on a regular basis. He recommends 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week.

Watkins founded the Iron Heart Foundation in Seattle 13 years ago after he collapsed at the finish line during a triathlon. He needed surgery and later learned he had a congenital heart defect. The foundation was created to provide a positive outlet for people impacted by heart disease through sports. Learn more about the foundation at IronHeartfoundation.org.
